About GLOW in Asia

GLOW in Asia offers a forum for presentation and discussion of advanced research in theoretical linguistics. Its conferences take place within Asia but attract participants from all over the world.

The first conference was held at the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL, now reorganized as the EFL University) in Hyderabad, India on January 20-23, 1998. But GLOW in Asia was not yet established then. The conference was an "extraordinary meeting" of GLOW (Generative Linguistics in the Old World, henceforth European GLOW), organized in response to requests to have its annual conference outside Europe, in particular, in India. The conference was a big success with participants from Asia, Europe and the U.S. In the business meeting, the participants expressed wishes to continue having conferences in Asia, and the local organizers promised to work toward this goal, suggesting Nanzan University in Japan as the next site.

The linguists at Nanzan immediately started working on the next conference in close collaboration with the local organizers of the Hyderabad GLOW. In this process, the European GLOW provided full support for the conference and for the establishment of the Asian GLOW as its brother organization. The second conference took place at Nanzan University on September 19-22, 1999 with more than 120 participants, as one of the special events celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the university. It was at the business meeting of this conference that the participants formally voted for the establishment of GLOW in Asia. The Asian GLOW executive committee was also established to ensure continuity and National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan was suggested as the site of the third GLOW in Asia.

Since then, the meetings of GLOW in Asia have been planned by the executive committee and the local organizers. The third conference took place in Taiwan (National Tsing Hua University, 2002), the fourth conference in Korea (Seoul National University, 2003), the fifth in India (Jawaharlal Nehru University and the University of Delhi, 2005), and the sixth in Hong Kong (the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2007). The seventh meeting was held at the original site, the English and Foreign Languages (EFL) University in Hyderabad (2009), the eighth was hosted by Beijing Language and Culture University in China (2010), the ninth by Mie University in Japan (2012), the tenth by National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan (2014) and the eleventh by the National University of Singapore (2017). The Twelfth conference was at Dongguk University in Seoul (2019), the Thirteenth was organized by the Chinese University of Hong Kong as an online special (2022), and they hosted the fourteenth conference as well (2024). These conferences were made possible by support from the host institutions, the local granting agencies and the local linguists, and above all by the selfless efforts by the local organizers. Thanks to them, GLOW in Asia has contributed greatly to the advancement of theoretical linguistics in Asia, and has developed into a conference that represents theoretical linguistics in the Eastern World.
