Introduction
The Center for the Study of Human Relations employs a broad cross-disciplinary approach in its research into human relations. Wanting to contribute to the creation of a society rich in humanity, the Center actively releases its research findings and opens its seminars etc. to the public.
The current Center has its origins in the Center for the Study of Human Relations established in 1977 within Nanzan Junior College. Since then, the Center has used T-group and implemented and researched experiential learning using the laboratory method, becoming a leading institute in Japan in these approaches.
In addition to opening its classes to the public, the Center holds public lectures, issues a research bulletin entitled the Nanzan Journal of Human Relations, collects materials related to the field of human relations, sends out a mail magazine and undertakes initiatives such as contracted project work. These activities are all designed to help create a society that is rich in humanity, that cherishes each and every individual and allows everyone to lead their lives in a manner befitting that person's chosen path.
Activities
Public training
From a desire to have people avail themselves of the opportunity to undergo training the Center for the Study of Human Relations offers a broad range of open seminars on human relations and the pedagogy involved in experiential learning. The key lectures offered are related to experiential learning using the laboratory method, with T-group and trainer's training also being carried out. "Organization development laboratories" involving researchers from overseas are attracting attention for providing an opportunity to learn about the latest aspects organization development theory and practice. In addition, seminars are held on human relations related topics such as cooperative learning, the body, and counselling.
Since their inception, many people have come from all over Japan to participate in these public lectures. As of 2018, a total of more than 8,200 people have attended.
Bulletin
In order to release the results of the cross-disciplinary research that is carried out into human relations, research papers and reports etc. written by staff of the Center for the Study of Human Relations are published once a year in a research bulletin entitled the Nanzan Journal of Human Relations. The bulletin (published in Japanese) features special sections, articles, research notes, collections of exercises and verbatim transcriptions of public lectures.
Other Matters
The Center for the Study of Human Relations operates a partnership with the NTL Institute for Applied Behavioral Science in the United States. This Institute is known for having created T-group and developed the field of organization development.
