This talk outlined how, despite the frequent characterization of media production during the Ne Win era (1962-1988) being stifled by both the nationalization of the economy as well as the government's draconian censorship regime, films produced during this so-called "Burmese Way to Socialism" period are hardly bereft of international references, fashions and cosmopolitan cachet.
The year of Ne Win's military coup, 1962 also signified the apex of Burmese film production, with 92 feature films released to cinema halls that year. Whereas the Revolutionary Council and Burmese Socialist Program Party governments oversaw both a tighter economic management and ideological constraints on film production, the motion picture industry continued to make popular films.
A significant number of these films were remakes of Hollywood films; previous stories are translated and modified to fit with the Burmese context, as well as made appropriate to the imperatives of the government censor board. The talk focused on some of the ways in which the film industry, despite its cosmopolitan aura, followed selected aspects of the Burmese Way to Socialism.
Their were a number of questions from the floor about Burmese history, media history, and cultural production.
