趣　旨：

本講演では、日本の伝統的建造物の保存に関する記録化研究について、その内容を紹介するとともに、Azby Brown 氏の専門的知見を通じて、当該研究をより広範な学術的・文化的文脈の中に位置づける。

また、古民家および関連する伝統建築の歴史的・現代的意義への理解を深め、それらの保存をめぐる主要な課題を明らかにすることを通じて、建造文化遺産の保全、伝統建築技術の継承、さらには農村地域の再生におけるこれらの取り組みの可能性に関する議論に寄与することを目指す。

本講演は、学生・教職員に加え、建築家、設計者、職人、保存専門家、政策立案者、建築および文化遺産分野の研究者、ならびに伝統建築や地域に根ざした保存活動に関心を有する一般市民など、多様な参加者を対象とする。

さらに、進行中の研究と専門的知見を接続することで、知見に基づく対話を促進し、分野横断的な交流を促すとともに、日本および国際的文脈における文化遺産の保存、持続可能性、文化的継承をめぐる幅広い議論に貢献することを目的とする。

報　告：

Azby Brown, internationally recognized author and architectural historian, gave a fascinating master class introduction to kominka, exploring architecture, craftsmanship, history and culture.

 Azby first explained the history of kominka in Japan back to the Jomon perio. He traced the development of kominka characteristics as they developed into the contemporary structures of present-day Japan. In his visually rich presentation slides, Azby showed the many different types of weaving and carpentry used in both traditional and more contemporary Japanese architecture. The thoughtfully chosen photos and hand-drawn illustrations skilfully connected Japan's architectural past, present and future.

 Azby made the case that the kominka do not exist in isolation but rather are embedded in relationships that span the natural and cultural environment. He argued that the present generation should be "good ancestors" for future generations, taking care not only of kominka but also the environment surrounding them. This would be one way to preserve the history and culture of kominka, and maintain their contemporary relevance.

A diverse group of people joined the presentation, coming from as far away as Tokyo, Wakayama Prefecture and the Noto Peninsula to listen to Azby. R44 was fully packed, and late arrivals had to stand. Chika Usui translated for participants who preferred to listen in Japanese. In the Q&A session after the presentation, many thoughtful questions were posed. These conversations continued after the presentation over dinner, and new connections were developed.　（文責：Robert Croker）
